Irene's Journey at Mary Chia: From Novice to Branch Manager

In 1992, I took a leap that would define my professional life in the beauty industry—I joined the very first Mary Chia outlet at Goldhill. Back then, the atmosphere was a unique blend of vibrancy and intimacy, with a small, dedicated team driven by a shared commitment to exceptional service. I had the rare privilege of working closely with two remarkable individuals—Wendy and Mary Chia, the visionary founder of the brand. Their passion and dedication cultivated an environment that felt more like a family than a workplace.

In those early days, our structure was fluid. We didn’t have formal titles like therapists, consultants, or branch managers. Instead, we wore many hats, each of us contributing to a collective goal: nurturing client relationships and elevating their experience. The camaraderie we shared made even the toughest challenges feel manageable. Mary Chia, or “Mei Jie” as we called her, was our guiding force, offering unwavering support and inspiration. Wendy’s dedication to her vision pushed us to give our best every day.

As the Mary Chia brand expanded, so too did the opportunities for growth. Wendy and Mei Jie became increasingly involved in overseeing other outlets and managing headquarters, which left me to step up in new ways. It was during this pivotal time that I was promoted to branch manager of the Goldhill outlet—a role that carried both significant responsibility and exciting potential for personal and professional development.

Stepping into leadership was as exhilarating as it was challenging. I quickly realized that effective management hinges on open communication and teamwork. I made it my mission to create a collaborative environment where every team member felt valued and empowered to share their ideas. I’ve always believed that a culture of inclusivity not only boosts morale but also drives better decision-making and enhances service delivery. By recognizing each person’s unique strengths, we could work together harmoniously toward our shared objectives.

As branch manager, I focused on instilling a sense of purpose and belonging within the team. Regular meetings became a forum for sharing updates, celebrating wins, and tackling obstacles as a collective. Encouraging open dialogue built trust and camaraderie, which ultimately translated into exceptional service for our clients. Watching my team grow—both individually and together—has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my role.

Mary Chia has played an instrumental role not just in my career advancement, but also in my personal development. The company’s commitment to nurturing talent is evident in its dedication to employee growth. I was fortunate to have been provided with opportunities for external training and skill-building, experiences that broadened my perspective and equipped me with tools that have made me a more effective leader. I am deeply grateful for this investment in my development, which has empowered me to lead with confidence and clarity.

Reflecting on my journey from a novice team member to branch manager, I am filled with gratitude. The foundation built during those formative years at Goldhill continues to guide me as a leader. I treasure the relationships I’ve built and the milestones we’ve celebrated as a team.

Looking ahead, I remain committed to fostering a positive, collaborative environment where my team can continue to thrive. Together, we will uphold the values that have made Mary Chia a trusted name in the industry. I am excited to mentor the next generation of talent, ensuring our outlet remains a nurturing space for both clients and team members.
